  • candle"My heartfelt condolences to Gary's family. I knew Gary and his parents well in the early days. We were grade school classmates and teammates at Washington GS (for the great coach Bob Alpert) and at LP, and friendly rivals as opposing minor league coaches in Peru.He always had a kind heart and was a thoughtful person. Last time I saw him was at the Igloo about 20 some years ago when someone walked up behind me and said you never could shoot a reference he had often made about my basketball talents I turned and called him Howard in reference to his father and told him it was nice of him to remind me after not seeing me for 25 years. A great guy, he will be missed by many until we are reunited in the Lord's house."Tribute from: Dario Benvenuti

I'm stunned and saddened to hear of Gary's passing. He was a mentor for me in my early years writing sports at the News-Tribune; always helpful and encouraging. Always enjoyed laughs in the newsroom and wild stories from the press box.
My deepest sympathy and prayers to the family !"

His laugh was contagious and i never heard him say a cross word about anyone. the paper started a sports weekly and i wrote a bowling column Up Your Alley. I didn't know all the bowlers but every week i had a king and queen. Pat made the queen quite a few time until i was told he was guy. We both got a charge out of that. He like to fish and we wook him north for a few days, we all were on the water at 4:30am and Gary was in our boat when i saw his bobber go down and I looked at Gary and he was sound asleep. I said Gary and he he woke, set the hook and brought in a 6 lb. bass.
For sure I thought he would have gone to work for Bass Masters instead of Ducks Unlimited. But he loved to hunt down by Henry. So sorry for his faamily and my God rest his soul. And my final thought is this EUCHRE.....Gary knows what that means. Hope to see you in the next life."
