Marilyn Irene (Kunkel) Kassabaum, 94, of Granville, passed away Friday, June 23, 2017, at Liberty Village in Princeton, surrounded by her family.

Marilyn was born April 18, 1923 in Spring Valley, IL to Peter and Mary Magdalena (Meyer) Kunkel. She was raised on the farm by her grandmother, as her mother died in childbirth. Marilyn attended grade school at the one room Gehm school in the country, and graduated from Hopkins Township High School in Granville in 1941. She married her high school sweetheart, Charles H. Kassabaum on May 27, 1943, in Granville, at Sacred Heart Church, where she was a member her entire life.

Marilyn was the Putnam County Treasurer from 1970 to 1974. She was the Deputy Treasurer from 1966 to 1970 and 1974 to 1994, while her husband Charles was the Treasurer. Marilyn had nine children, 15 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren. She loved to garden, bake, do crossword puzzles, and can and freeze her own produce. Her family never ate store bought bread or store canned vegetables. Her onion bread, pastries, authentic old country Italian ante pasta, and hermit cookies were to die for. She loved to read, had a huge library, and instilled this love in all her children. One of her favorite TV shows was JAG. Marilyn and her husband, 'Kassy', loved to go out to eat and take day trips. She got to meet and chat with Ronald Reagan on two occasions during her tenure in the county treasurer's office.

She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society at her church and was very active for many years. She was a devoted Catholic.

She is survived by four sons, Craig Kassabaum of Peoria, IL, Bart (Connie) Kassabaum of Princeton, IL, Kurt Kassabaum of Granville, IL, and Blane (Mellisa) Kassabaum of Granville, IL, three daughters, Patricia (David) Shimmin of Bloomington, IL, Sherry (Ralph) Hastings of Bryan, TX, and Carole (Ernie) Terando, of Granville, IL, and a daughter-in-law, Gayle (Gary) Kassabaum, of Apple Valley, CA.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Charles, a sister, Hazel (Kunkel) Keutzer, a brother, John Wilbur Kunkel, and two children, Mark Edward Kassabaum, and Gary John Kassabaum.
