Joseph A. Ellena

Joseph A. Ellena, 82, of Standard passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2024 at OSF St. Claire Hospital in Princeton.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 22, 2024 at Dysart – Cofoid Funeral Chapel, 208 S. McCoy St., Granville, IL 61326.

Fire Department honors including walk through and bell service at 6:30 p.m.   Rosary will begin at 3:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at Nativity of Our Lord Church, 510 Richard A Mautino Drive, Spring Valley, IL 61362.

Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Granville.

Joe was born on April 4, 1941 in Spring Valley, IL to Joseph H. and Jean Ellena of Standard, IL.  He was a member of the Nativity of Our Lord in Spring Valley, IL and married Shirley Margherio on July 2, 1960 at St. Anthony’s Church in Spring Valley.

Joe and his wife Shirley were self employed most of their life. The Standard Fire and Rescue were Joe’s hobby.  Joe served on Granville Township, The Village of Standard and Putnam County Board.  He started the ambulance service in Putnam County and was a driver.  He was on Standard Fire and Rescue for over 50 years and was fire chief for 29 of those years.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley of Standard; two daughters, Sheryl (Terry) Emmerling of Granville and Janet (Steven) Cimei of LaSalle; two sons, John (Ashley) Ellena of Standard and Robert (Jennifer) Ellena of Princeton; 11 grandchildren, Nathan, Brianna, Morgan, Spencer, Aaron, Taylor, Hannah, Joseph, Gianna, Caden and Gino; six great -grandchildren, Shane, Aubrey, Greyson, Sloane, Salem and Kayleigh; one brother-in-law, Stanley Shevokas Jr. of Granville.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Delores.
