Walter G. Mecozzi, 95, of Springfield (formerly of Hennepin) passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at Mill Creek Special Care, Springfield. Walter was born on February 23, 1924 in Peru, IL to Nazareno and Rena (Capra) Mecozzi. He married Kathleen M. Podobinski on February 4, 1950 in Hennepin. She preceded him in death on June 29, 2018. After graduation he served in the United States Air Force during WWII and the Korean Conflict. Walter was a navigator and he was a retired Major in the Air Force after 25 years of service to his country. Walter received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with 7 oak leaf clusters and the Meritorious Service Medal. Walter was Supervisor of Assessments in Whiteside County and retired in 1986. Survivors include one son, Walter Paul (Susan) Mecozzi of Edmond, OK; three daughters, Sherry (Ronald) Dose of Lostant, IL; Kathleen (John Brogan) Tracey of Ramsey, New Jersey and Laura (Pete) Nicholls of Decatur, IL; one brother, Gerry Mecozzi of Illinois; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Service/Memorial Information
Mass of Christian burial will be at 2:00 pm on Monday, April 15, 2019 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Hennepin. Fr. Patrick DeMeulemeester will officiate. Burial will be in St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery, Hennepin, IL with full military honors. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:00 pm on Monday, April 15, 2019 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Hennepin. Dysart - Cofoid Funeral Chapel will be assisting the family with the arrangements.
