David Thompson Obituary

David Joseph Thompson, 82, of Granville, IL passed away on Friday, December 22, 2023 at OSF St. Joseph’s Medical Center, in Bloomington, IL.

Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 28, 2023 at Dysart – Cofoid Funeral Chapel, Granville.

Additional visitation will be from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 29, 2023 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Granville.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. following the visitation at the church.  Fr. Patrick DeMeulemeester will officiate.  Burial will be in Granville Cemetery with Military Honor Detail.

David was born on September 16, 1941 in Harrisburg, IL to Noble and Mary “Mae” (Coulter) Thompson.  He married Nancy Goodman Snell on February 26, 1977.  

He graduated from Drake University in 1963 with a degree in Pharmacy.  He honorably served his country as a United States Marine Corps Officer from 1966-1969 and was a Captain with Bravo Company, 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division in the Republic of Vietnam. David continued his lifestyle of selfless service to others and to his community as a pharmacist. He owned and operated Granville Drug Store for more than 30 years before he retired.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Church and Knights of Columbus, Granville American Legion, Putnam County VFW, Marine Corps League and Marine Corps Tanker Association.  He received the Purple Heart Award and Studs Terkel Award for exceptional citizenship.  He was inducted into Putnam County Athletic “Hall of Fame”. He coached minor league and little league baseball. He initiated the construction and fundraising for the PCHS track and was the head coach for the track team for nearly a decade, where the team went state bound numerous times.  He was on the Economics Board, Rotary, School Board (consolidated) and Village Board. David and Lee Shields saw local families in need and began giving food and other necessities before the start of the Food Pantry, where David was an avid volunteer.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Thompson of Granville; five sons, Richard (Terry) Thompson of McNabb, IL, Jason Snell of Humboldt, TN, Derek (Katie) Snell of Birch Run, MI, Daren (Whitney) Snell of Winchester, KY, and Timothy Thompson of Chicago, IL; three daughters, Terri (Scott) Devon of Grand Rapids, MI, Jamie (Eric) Manarin of Phoenix, AZ and Amy (Damon) Cornelius of Aurora, IL; one sister, Susie (Greg) Hodson of Harrisburg, IL with nephew Robert David and niece Elizabeth; grandchildren: Jessie (Cody) Grandadam and their sons, Hayden and Carter, Emerson David (Melissa) Devon, Cole Devon; Chloe and Karlee Manarin; Tanner and David Joseph Snell; Kenneth David, Keeley, Nora, and Stanley Snell; Haley, Nolan, and Layla Snell; Ronan, Titan, Lundin, and Torunn Cornelius. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Bradley.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to donor’s choice.

Pallbearers will be Richard Thompson, Jason Snell, Derek Snell, Daren Snell,

Timothy Thompson, and Bryan Haage.
