Douglas “Herby” Herbolsheimer, 66, of Hennepin passed away on Monday, December 29, 2025 at his residence.
Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 3, 2026 at Dysart – Cofoid Funeral Chapel, 208 S. McCoy St. Granville, IL.
Masonic service will be at 1:00 p.m. following the visitation at the funeral home. Cremation rites have been accorded. A private burial will be at a later date with military honors.
Doug was born on May 30, 1959 in Peru to Melvin and Susan (Moore) Herbolsheimer. He married Janelle (Cattani) on January 8, 1993 in Princeton. He spent the majority of his life on his 200 year old family farm in Hollowayville until his retirement when he and Janelle moved to Hennepin in 2022.
After graduating high school, he served 4 years in the United States Army as a tank commander, 3 of which were in Germany during the Cold War. Following his service in the Army, he began his 40 year career with Illinois Power where he worked at multiple power plants including Hennepin, Vermillion, and Plum Point.
When he wasn’t working, Herby enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, target shooting, traveling and looking for new places to eat. He was a member of the Princeton Masonic Lodge 587, a Knight Templar, and Scottish Rite.
Survivors include his wife Janelle Herbolsheimer of Hennepin; two sons, Matthew (Rachel) Reynolds of Peru and Martin (Ashley Whitworth) Herbolsheimer of Fort Campbell, KY.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, David.
