Jesse Hopkins Obituary

Dick Hopkins, 95, of McNabb, passed away Saturday, April 28, 2012 at his residence. The Dysart - Cofoid Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. Dick was born on September 30, 1916 in Bradford, Illinois, the son of Jesse and Julia Ternus Hopkins. He married Marjorie M. Hoeferlin on April 17, 1941 in Henry, Illinois. She passed away on November 24, 2000. Also preceding him in death were his parents, four brothers and three sisters. Dick graduated Bradford High School. While in high school, he was a member of the undefeated 1933 football team. He was also winner in the FFA Corn Husking Contest in 1933. Mr. Hopkins was a past member of Immaculate Catholic Church in Mt. Palantine until it closed and then became a member of St. Patrick's Parish. He was also a member of the McNabb American Legion, and former board member of the McNabb Grain Company. Dick was a horse racing fan all of his life. He was involved in breeding and training race horses. His most successful was "Rorty's Message" who won races at Quad City Downs and Balmoral. He is survived by his two sons, Richard L. (Gail) Hopkins of Farmington, Illinois and Phil N.(Nancy) Hopkins of McNabb, Illinois. One daughter also survives, Mrs. Monna Fay (Matt) Barta from Brandon Florida. Seven grandchildren survive: Kim Terrell, Crystal Fofana, Todd Hopkins, Therese Skwarczynski, Melanie Burkett, Matt Barta, and Michelle Barta. Also surviving are thirteen great- grand children. Pallbearers will be Todd Hopkins, Pat Terrell, Bob Rehn, Jeff Rehn, Bill King and Denny Chambers. Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Kraft and Larry Guderjan. Memorial contributions may be directed to McNabb Fire Department or Putnam County Ambulance.

Service/Memorial Information

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Hennepin. Visitation will be Tuesday, one hour prior to mass at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Henry. Illinois. Military honors will be conducted at the cemetery by the McNabb American Legion.
