Michael James "Mike" Vaskie Jr., 70, of McNabb died on Sunday, July 6, 2014 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria. Mike was born on February 9, 1944 in Du Quoin, IL to Michael James and Eileen (Seifert) Vaskie Sr. He married Marcia Kunde on November 21, 1964 at St. Pat's Church in Dixon. He graduated from LaSalle Peru High School and attended Linotype Operators School in New York City. Several years later he attended and graduated from Oklahoma Horseshoe School in Stillwater, OK. Mike worked at Patten Tractor in Oglesby where he retired last year as a service manager. Mike was the Village President of McNabb, serving since 2013. Mike served on the McNabb Fire Protection District board and was instrumental in starting the full-time ambulance service, PC EMS. Over the years Mike was involved in various community organizations such as 4-H, coached Little League baseball and was a volunteer Fire Fighter/First Responder in Piedmont, OK. A modern time cowboy, Mike raised horses for years and enjoyed American cowboy history. Over the past few years he joined the Vermillion Long Riders which was a cowboy action shooting club, going by the alias "Muddy River Mike". He was a member of Single Action Shooting Society. Surviving is his wife, Marcia of McNabb; one son, John (Brook) Vaskie of Piedmont, Oklahoma; two daughters, Julie (Mike) Padilla of Sandwich and Jeannie (Lisa) Mekley of El Paso, IL; one sister, Cindy (Jim) Murphy of Varna; seven grandchildren, Taylor, Kristin, Caitlin, Dakota, Aubrie, Cole and Katie Jo. He was preceded in death by his parents. In lieu of flowers contributions may be directed to Putnam County EMS, McNabb Fire Department or Donor's Choice. Service will be at 5 p.m. on Friday, July 11, 2014 at Dysart - Cofoid Funeral Chapel, Granville. Doug Clinton will officiate. Cremation rites have been accorded. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. on Friday, July 11, 2014 at Dysart - Cofoid Funeral Chapel, Granville.
