Susan Goldsmith Obituary

Susan Goldsmith, resident of Hennepin, Illinois, passed into eternal life on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at the age of 77. She was born on October 11, 1936, to John L. and Margaret (Wood) Niblack in Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, Indiana. Susan graduated from Broad Ripple High School, Indianapolis, and Purdue University, BS, 1958. In 1957 she married the love of her life, Linn Goldsmith in Indianapolis. After living three years in Okinawa, Japan, while Linn served in the Air Force, they returned to Chicago where Linn earned his J.D. at the University of Chicago. The couple and their three children moved to Granville, Illinois, in 1965 when Mr. Goldsmith started employment at Boyle and Goldsmith Attorney's at Law. After several years as a homemaker and mother, Susan returned to the workforce as an English teacher in Henry, Illinois. In 1977, she founded the Putnam County Daycare Center, the first state licensed child care center to serve working parents in Putnam County. Susan served years as the center's director. In 1991 she earned a Master's degree in counseling from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, and worked ten years as a mental health therapist at Covenant Counseling in Princeton, Illinois. Then, Susan and Linn spent a happy retirement for many years between Hennepin Farms and Naples, Florida. Susan was active in several organizations including the Methodist Women of the Hennepin Methodist Church, Freedom House Board, 708 Mental Health Board, League of Women Voters, the Putnam County Historical Society and the Putnam County Educational Foundation. Susan will be remembered for her devotion to her husband, love of and pride in her children and grandchildren, love of poetry and the fine arts, and masterful cooking and gardening. Susan is survived by her husband of 57 years, Linn Goldsmith; three children: Margaret (Scott) Idlas of Appleton, Wisconsin, Richard (Jane) Goldsmith of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Carol (Chris) Rich of Geneva, Illinois; eight grandchildren: Amy (Brandon) Cavalier, Nicole (Weston) Richardson, Jessica Goldsmith, Daniel Goldsmith, John and Stephen Idlas, Christopher and Madeline Rich; her sister, Nancy Baxter, brother-in-law, Art Baxter, sister-in-law Edith Goldsmith and many nephews and nieces. Dysart - Cofoid Funeral Chapel will be assisting the family with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hennepin Methodist Church or donor's choice.

Service/Memorial Information

A memorial service will be held at the Hennepin Methodist Church on Saturday, May 10, at 3:00 p.m. The family will be receiving visitors at the church between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. with the service following. Pastor Carol Stufflebeam will officiate.
